18-year-old driver dead after being shot on I-64 in Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- An 18-year-old driver is dead after being shot while driving along Interstate 64 in Richmond early Sunday morning.

Just after 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, Virginia State Police arrived at the scene of a shooting on I-64 eastbound just before Exit 187 in the City of Richmond.

State police discovered that a 2016 Nissan Maxima was traveling along the road when the driver was shot. The vehicle exited onto the ramp for I-95 and stopped on the shoulder, according to state police.

The driver, who has been identified as 18-year-old Naseem Kariem King, died as a result of his injuries.

There were two passengers inside the vehicle with King, but police said they were not injured.

As of the time of reporting, all traffic on I-64 eastbound is being diverted at Staples Mill Road.

"Motorists should expect delays in the area for several hours," officials said. "Please contact VDOT for information on detours."

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate.
