The Alleghany Highlands of Virginia offers some of the most breathtaking hiking experiences, particularly in the fall when the mountains are awash in brilliant hues of orange, red, and yellow. Nestled among the scenic Allegheny Mountains, this region is known for its stunning landscapes, peaceful trails, and the crisp autumn air that makes hiking even more enjoyable.
A Variety of Trails for All Skill Levels
One of the highlights of hiking in the Alleghany Highlands is the diversity of trails available. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful stroll, there’s something for everyone.
For those seeking an easy, family-friendly option, the Jackson River Scenic Trail is perfect. This 16-mile, mostly flat trail runs parallel to the Jackson River and offers beautiful views of the river, farmland, and nearby mountains. It’s particularly well-suited for fall hikes, with opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy the vibrant foliage along the way. The trail is accessible from four public access points, and its finely crushed gravel surface is ideal for walking, jogging, or biking. Rent a bike from Alleghany Outdoors, the region’s outfitter, for an enjoyable ride along this beautiful trail.
If you’re looking for something a bit more challenging, the trails at Douthat State Park offer an excellent adventure. If incredible views are your “cup of tea,” the Tuscarora Overlook would be the premier viewpoint. Plenty of switchbacks make this hike interesting and the scenery from the top will blow you away. Hikers can either take Blue Suck Fall Trail to Tuscarora Overlook Trail or take Stoney Run to Tuscarora Overlook Trail. Both trails are roughly 8-9 miles total, out and back. Hikers and Mountain Bikers call Douthat State Park one of Virginia’s jewels and it is hard to argue with that sentiment.
For panoramic mountain views, the North Mountain Trail is another fantastic option. The North Mountain Trail from the beginning at Tri-County Rd. travels approximately 8.6 miles through terrain that varies in elevation from 1,700 to 3,200 feet. The trail winds by streams and through dense forests. A panoramic view of Lake Robertson and the Lexington area, appears about 8 miles from the trailhead. Though more strenuous, the effort is well worth it as the trail offers sweeping views of the Alleghany Highlands, which are especially stunning in the fall. If you want to take a less strenuous route, you can access the North Mountain Overlook with only .11 of hiking by taking Exit 35 off of Interstate 64, traveling west along Route 269 to State Route 770. From there, take a left and go 4.1 miles to the top of the mountain where the parking lot will be on the right.
Scenic Landmarks
As you visit the region, don’t miss some of the natural landmarks that make the Alleghany Highlands unique. Falling Spring Falls, one of Virginia’s most photographed waterfalls, is an 80 foot cascading waterfall surrounded by a backdrop of the gorgeous Allegheny Mountains. It’s easily accessible from a roadside scenic overlook, making it a must-see stop on any trip to the Alleghany Highlands.
Another notable spot is Humpback Bridge, the oldest remaining bridge of its kind in the United States. This historic site, featuring a wayside park, is a popular place for a picnic and is home to one of the most unique LOVEworks signs in Virginia, providing a picturesque setting against the backdrop of vibrant fall colors.
The Perfect Fall Getaway
Hiking in the Alleghany Highlands during fall offers more than just a workout; it’s an immersive experience in nature. The vibrant colors, the crisp mountain air, and the peacefulness of the trails make it a prime destination for anyone looking to escape into the beauty of autumn.
So, lace up your boots, grab your camera, and head to the Alleghany Highlands this fall. Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll along the Jackson River Scenic Trail or hiking up to the top of a gorgeous mountain vista, you’ll be surrounded by nature’s finest display.
