28-year-old Richmond woman killed in multi-vehicle crash on I-95 in Henrico

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 28-year-old Richmond woman was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Henrico County on Thursday afternoon. At around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, Virginia State Police responded to a multi-vehicle crash on northbound I-95 at the 81.5-mile marker in Henrico County, which killed 28-year-old Elisabeth Mary Rumford, of Richmond. According to state police, Rumford was driving a 2007 Ford Escape when it crashed into the rear of a Ram 3500 service truck that was stopped in traffic. The crash reportedly caused the Ram to be pushed into a 2016 Ford pickup. Authorities said an initial investigation indicated Rumford had been traveling in the left lane and failed to notice traffic stopping due to an incident further north on I-95 involving a vehicle fire. According to state police, the driver compartment of Rumford's vehicle was severely damaged after the vehicle crashed into the back of the Ram, and she died from her injuries at the scene. State police said the driver of the Ram, identified as a 45-year-old Petersburg man, suffered injuries not considered to be life-threatening and was transported to a hospital. The driver of the Ford pickup was reported uninjured in the crash. State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
