Chesterfield Police release more information on deadly officer-involved shooting

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Chesterfield County Police Department has released more information about an incident over the weekend in which a suspect was shot and killed by officers during a pursuit in which he fired at two police cruisers. According to police, at around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, an officer stopped a driver who was driving erratically on Iron Bridge Road near Jessup Road. After stopping on Jessup Road, the driver reportedly got out of the vehicle and approached the officer. The driver ignored the officer's orders to get back into the vehicle and continued towards him, resisting his attempt to detain him and striking him several times and trying to get his firearm. The officer deployed his stun gun and pepper spray, but the suspect was able to get back in the vehicle and took off heading north on Jessup Road. The officer followed the suspect on Jessup Road and then onto Pineland Road, before the suspect made a U-turn in the area of Ronson Road and Spoke Court and fired several shots at the officer's vehicle as he passed by. The suspect returned to the intersection of Pineland Road and Jessup Road, where he encountered a second Chesterfield Police officer. The suspect fired several shots at the officer's vehicle and the officer returned fire. The two pursuing officers continued to follow the suspect on Jessup Road as he approached Iron Bridge Road. A third officer joined the pursuit and the second and third officer fired at the suspect's vehicle, which slowed and came to a stop in a westbound lane on Iron Bridge Road. The suspect, who has not yet been identified by police, was pronounced dead at the scene. The three officers involved in the incident, none of whom were injured, have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
