Cumberland Schools chooses not to send kids home on buses due to snow

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Cumberland County schools chose not to send their students home on buses Friday afternoon due to snow, instead asking parents and guardians to come pick up their kids.

On Friday, Feb. 6, snow began to fall across Virginia. Our StormTracker8 team expects the steady snow to come to an end later in the evening, with many in Central Virginia ending up with two to four inches of accumulation.

Cumberland County Public Schools (CUPS) announced in a social post Friday afternoon that it would not send buses out due to the dangerous road conditions.

"Due to the current road conditions, we cannot jeopardize the safety of our students and transportation staff," the social post read. "We will not be sending buses out. We are asking parents and guardians to please pick up their child as soon as it is safely possible."

The district added that staff will be available to monitor students and they will feed students. Parents are urged to contact the division if they have any questions.

A Virginia State Police spokesperson told 8News that it is not handling a "larger than normal number of crashes in the area" as of around 5 p.m. Friday.

"As always, if drivers encounter wintery conditions, Virginia State Police ask that they slow down and provide greater distance between them and other vehicles," the spokesperson said. "This allows for more control over the vehicle and greater stopping distance if traction is lost."

8News reached out to the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office for information on crashes in the area. We have also reached out to CUPS for more information. As of the time of reporting, we have not yet heard back.

This is a developing story, stay with 8News for updates.
