Game of the Week Preview: Glen Allen at Varina
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- This Friday night, the undefeated Glen Allen Jaguars will hit the road to take on the 3-1 Varina Blue Devils in what was voted the 8Sports Blitz Game of the Week. “Two physical teams battling it out," said Varina head coach Marcus Lewis about what he expects to see in the game. "They played us tough last year. They got a great group of athletes, an older group with great size. Physical, real aggressive on both sides of the ball. So I’m looking forward to seeing a physical game." Varina is off to another impressive start this season, with the team's only loss coming in double overtime against Indian River. The Blue Devils have since rebounded with three consecutive victories and are looking for extend their winning streak against Glen Allen. “We also want to have these games like the double overtime loss to get ready for the playoffs," said Lewis. "So looking at our schedule, this is what we wanted -- we wanted to get tested in the regular season to know where we are and where we need to be at." Meanwhile, Glen Allen has been rolling through their opponents, including Thomas Dale in a previous Game of the Week. Glen Allen Head Coach Malik Sexton is confident that his team can maintain their momentum and improve to 6-0. “A lot of people think we are the same old Glen Allen team—a couple of good games and then they will fall eventually. What I’m trying to get through their heads is that they are not," said Sexton. "We believe in who they are, we just need to get those young guys to see and believe who they are as well." Sexton emphasized the importance of being mistake-free in the upcoming matchup. “The one thing about us is penalties, it’s what’s killing us. It’s what’s giving other teams points against us," said Sexton. "That’s one thing I’m emphasizing this week -- try to make the least amount of mistakes we could possibly make. If we can do that, we can win this game -- we will win this game.” The action kicks off at 7:00 p.m. at Varina High School, located 7053 Messer Road in eastern Henrico County.
