KING WILLIAM COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News is your back-to-school headquarters this 2025-26 school year! Here's what students and families kicking off a new academic year at King William County Public Schools need to know.

The first day of school for students at King William County Public Schools is August 18.

Things to know and what to bring to school

The school district provided the arrival and dismissal times for several schools, which can be found below:

  • Cool Spring Primary School
    • Arrival -- 8 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
    • Dismissal -- 2:45 p.m.
  • Acquinton Elementary School
    • Arrival -- 8 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
    • Dismissal -- 2:45 p.m.
  • Hamilton-Holmes Middle School
    • Arrival -- 7:45 a.m. to 8:10 a.m.
    • Dismissal -- 3:05 p.m.
  • King William High School
    • Arrival -- 7:45 a.m. to 8:10 a.m.
    • Dismissal -- 3:15 p.m.

Officials also urged parents to check their child's bus times through the My Ride K-12 app.

Policies, changes for students and families to know about

In terms of security, the school district is implementing new OpenGate detection systems at middle and high schools this year. The middle school systems will begin after the first several weeks of school.

When it comes to device policy, cell phones and other personal electronic devices are not permitted during the school day.

The school district said that parents should have already received communication about school meals and nutrition services being offered, including information regarding online menus, meal prices and more. Additional details can be found by clicking here.

Regarding staffing, the district is experiencing shortages for certified teachers and paraprofessionals in their special education department.

Officials also provided updates on construction projects, including a turf field installation that will help provide an upgraded facility for students and the athletic programs offered.

Additionally, King William High School has added a new Cosmetology program.

Anything on the calendar before school starts?

On Wednesday, Aug. 13 there will be an open house held from 3 to 6 p.m. for all schools.
