Red light enforcement cameras coming to Richmond intersections

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Red light enforcement cameras are coming to Richmond, with these cameras set to go live at several key intersections by the end of January.

In a Jan. 21 press release, the city announced that red light safety cameras have been fully installed at four Richmond intersections, including:

  • 25th Street and Main Street
  • Belvidere Street and Cary Street
  • Chamberlayne Avenue and Brookland Park Boulevard
  • Chamberlayne Avenue and Laburnum Avenue

This first pilot wave of cameras -- which the city said were intentionally placed at high-risk intersections -- will become operational on Friday, Jan. 30.

For the first 30 days these cameras are active, drivers will not receive a citation if they run a red light. Instead, they will receive a warning notice.

After that warning period ends, drivers who run a red light will receive a $50 citation, as allowed for under Virginia law.

In 2022, more than 1,000 people died and over 100,000 were hurt as a result of drivers running red lights, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Cities with red light safety cameras have seen related death rates drop by as much as 21%, per the release.

Work to install these cameras at an additional six intersections has already begun. This includes the intersections of:

  • Mechanicsville Turnpike and Fairfield Way
  • Belt Voulevard and Hull Street Road
  • Cowardin Avenue/Richmond Highway and Hull Street
  • German School Road and Midlothian Turnpike
  • Commerce Road and Maury Street
  • Hull Street and Warwick Road

This expansion of the city's Safety Camera Program has been in the works for some time.
