Richmond-area residents who want to quit smoking can enroll in one-on-one program

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is encouraging Richmond-area residents who want to quit smoking to participate in the Free From Tobacco coaching program. In Virginia, each year, about 10,300 adults die from smoking, 1,600 non-smokers die due to secondhand smoke and 6,900 children lose a parent to a smoking-related death, according to a Nov. 20 press release from the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD). Healthcare for tobacco use costs Virginians $3.61 billion each year. "Given current smoking levels, 152,000 children living today will ultimately die of smoking," the RHHD said in the release. The RHHD offers the Free From Tobacco program to anyone interested in quitting smoking. According to the release, it is a "culturally competent one-on-one coaching program" meant to help Richmond-area residents not only drop the habit, but not pick it back up again. First shows for After Hours Concerts’ return to Henrico’s Innsbrook Pavilion announced “Statistics show that most people take multiple attempts to quit tobacco,” said Richard Baker, a RHHD Free From Tobacco Coach. “We want clients to think more about what they’re buying and using. We’re helping people learn to feed another part of their brain to replace addictive behaviors.”  The program's features include: Weekly coaching sessions, which can be done in-person or virtually Education on the health benefits of quitting and what strategies you can use to quit Background on the history of tobacco Access to videos and useful surveys Better management of potential chronic diseases, to promote overall health and wellbeing Participants are also connected to resources like Quit Now Virginia, a statewide evidence-based service for those who want to quit any tobacco or nicotine products -- including smokeless tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vapes.
