StormTracker8: Significant Impacts Expected from Weekend Winter Storm

Richmond, Va (WRIC) -- We have new updates on the Winter Storm arriving this weekend.

The frontal boundary tomorrow will usher in arctic air and pave the way for the next weather system to bring us winter weather. Saturday will be cold, with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens. Snow will begin Saturday late afternoon, and we are all expected to begin with snow only as precipitation. On Saturday night into Sunday morning, a layer of air in the atmosphere is expected to warm. This will cause precipitation to switch over to a wintry mix and then, most likely freezing rain all day Sunday.

We have our first look at forecast snow and ice accumulations. This forecast could change, but based on recent model trends, we are growing more concerned regarding the ice accumulations. This would bring significant impacts to Central Virginia. Power outages are looking more and more likely.

Monday morning, precipitation will wrap. The problem is, temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing until the end of next week. Snow and ice will not melt quickly. This could spell significant disruptions at least through the start of next week, potentially beyond.

Prepare now for an ice storm this weekend. Remember generator safety, fill you car's tank, and get necessities from the grocery store if necessary.

Tonight and tomorrow will actually be fairly nice. Lows will be above freezing for many, and tomorrow afternoon will be gorgeous, with highs in the 50s. Soak in the calm before the storm.
