Texas teenager battling cancer sworn in as Virginia State Trooper

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A teenager who has captured the hearts of the world has made a visit to Richmond.

Law enforcement officers across Virginia have sworn in DJ Daniel -- who has been battling cancer since 2018 and who was President Donald Trump's personal guest at his latest address to Congress.

Many people, including Governor Glenn Youngkin and Attorney General Jason Miyares, have called DJ an inspiration for overcoming several medical obstacles at a young age. Now the commonwealth invites this police officer to become one of its law enforcement agents.

What started as a goal to be sworn into 1,000 police agencies, DJ has now sworn the oath to service and country to 3,000.

Virginia State Police is now the latest to call DJ a Virginia State Trooper as his fellow law enforcement officials, representing all corners of the Old Dominion, watched and offered a congratulations.

For some of these officers, Tuesday is the first time they have met DJ since his visit to Washington, D.C. and being President Trump's guest at his joint session of Congress speech in March.

His more than a dozen surgeries as a patient has only made DJ stronger as Virginia is his latest state to share his story and offer some advice. Though only given a handful of months to live in 2018, DJ is defying odds.

"Be nice to more people and live a great life. Please don't get in trouble because I'm not trying to be the one to arrest you," DJ said. "You never know when God's going to call you home. You know what's crazy? On my 13th brain surgery, God gave me my wings, but he said 'I'm going to take these back because you don't get these until you graduate The School of Life.'"

DJ's father tells us the family will now head to the Caribbean to receive accolades there.
