Virginia sees surge in respiratory illnesses, including RSV and flu
RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) -- Virginia is experiencing a high number of hospitalizations for respiratory illnesses, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH). Approximately 20% of the emergency department visits in the state are for respiratory issues. Children four years old and younger are particularly affected, as they seem to be the most admitted in hospitals for respiratory syncytial virus. The surge in cases includes an increase in COVID-19 and flu infections. Those who are 65 and older have had the largest percentage of hospitalizations for COVID-19, while ages 5 to 17 were most impacted by the flu. To help reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses, the CDC recommends getting updated vaccinations and practicing everyday preventive measures, such as thorough handwashing.
