11-year-old girl dies after being hit by vehicle while riding bicycle in Henrico County

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- An 11-year-old girl died after police said she was hit by a vehicle in Henrico County while riding a bicycle.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, officers with the Henrico County Police Division responded to the 8900 block of Three Chopt Road for a reported vehicle crash involving a bicylist.

When officers arrived, they found an 11-year-old girl in the road with obvious signs of trauma. Police said she was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where she later died.

Officials said the preliminary investigation indicates that the girl was riding a bicycle alongside a boy who was riding an electric scooter when they tried to cross Three Chopt Road.

A vehicle heading east along Three Chopt Road avoided hitting the boy on the scooter, but hit the 11-year-old girl when she tried to cross the road.

Police said the driver remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. Speed and alcohol are reportedly not factors involved in the crash.

According to officials, the investigation indicates that the girl was not wearing protective equipment.
