13-year-old boy injured after being hit by car while driving motorcycle in Henrico
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 13-year-old boy has been severely injured after police said that he was hit by a car while driving a motorcycle in Henrico County.
At 8:57 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, the Henrico Police Division responded to the intersection of Wyndham Park Drive and Dominion Club Drive for a reported crash between an electric motorcycle and a vehicle.
In an initial investigation, police said that the teenager was driving an electric motorcycle on Wyndham Park Drive and was attempting to turn onto Glenshaw Drive when he hit a Lexus RX.
Police said several people in the area were able to help the teenager until first responders arrived.
The teenager was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where officers said he remains in "critical condition."
Dark roadways, lack of lights and reflective equipment on the motorcycle and dark clothing appear to be contributing factors in the crash, which according to police, remains under investigation.
They are advising residents to follow various proper safety measures as part of the, "Never Too Safe On 2 Wheels" campaign, which include:
- Obey traffic lights, signs, speed limits and lane markings
- Wear a helmet and other protective gear
- Ride with the flow of traffic and leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles
- Always check behind you and signal before you change lanes
- Apply reflective materials to your motorcycle and/or helmet
