14 seniors lead Monacan lacrosse to program’s first state tournament appearance

RICHMOND, Va. -- For the first time in program history, behind 14 seniors, the Monacan High School boys lacrosse team has secured a spot in the state tournament. The Chiefs will play Meridan this Friday at 6 p.m. in Falls Church.

Head Coach David Deck has been at the forefront of the Chiefs' historic run, and to see his team take this step is extra special. "Oh, it's more than special, I've never been around a group of young men that has been closer than this group," Deck remarked. "That's part of the joy of being around these guys."

The Chiefs made history by defeating James Monroe in the region semifinals last week, clinching their spot in the state quarterfinals. Senior goalie Logan Russell reflected on the team's journey, "We've been building up to this whole tournament for the past four years. At the beginning of the season, we thought we had a chance. Halfway through, we were doing alright, and now, at the end, we all came together, pushed through, and here we are."

Senior defender Brady Patterson echoed Russell, emphasizing the growth and bond among the team over the years. "We all came in as little freshmen, and we were all friends," Patterson said. "Over these four years, we've gotten better and better, and to see the progress we've made is kind of crazy."

The state quarterfinals are set to take place this Friday at 6:00 PM at Meridian High School, where Monacan will aim for its first-ever state tournament victory.
