18-year-old killed in I-64 shooting was Varina High School student
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Eighteen-year-old Naseem King, who died after he was shot while driving along Interstate 64 on Sunday, was a high school student from Henrico County.
King, who died following the shooting, was a student at Varina High School, according to a Henrico County Public Schools spokesperson.
Just after 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, Virginia State Police arrived at the scene of a shooting on I-64 eastbound just before Exit 187 in Henrico County.
State police said a 2016 Nissan Maxima was traveling along the road when the driver, King, was shot. The vehicle exited onto the ramp for I-95 and stopped on the shoulder, according to state police.
King died due to his injuries, according to police. There were two passengers inside the vehicle with King, but police said they were not injured.
The school division said school-based mental health professionals were available on Monday, June 2, to help classmates who may have been struggling with the loss.
"Sunday's shooting appears to be an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community," a spokesperson with Virginia State Police told 8News on Monday. "The incident remains under active investigation by the Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation."
