27-year-old woman killed in three-vehicle crash in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 27-year-old woman is dead following a three-vehicle crash in Madison County on Saturday.

According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22 on James Madison Highway, just north of Forest Drive.

Police said a Hyundai Elantra was heading north on James Madison Highway when it abruptly slowed down and was rear-ended by a Toyota Camry. The impact reportedly caused the Hyundai to cross the centerline and collide head-on with a Subaru Crosstrek heading south.

The driver of the Hyundai, 27-year-old Erica L. Collier of the Brightwood area of Madison County, had life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital where she later died due to her injuries. Officials said she was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Toyota, 20-year-old Matthew Goins of the town of Gordonsville in Orange County, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt.

Police said the driver of the Subaru, a 16-year-old girl from Fairfax County, had minor injuries but refused treatment at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt.

Goins was reportedly charged with following too closely. Officials continue to investigate the crash.
