4-ton tater travels to Richmond in cross-country truck tour

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A truck carrying a colossal-sized potato made a stop in Richmond on Tuesday as part of a cross-country tour.

The Famous Idaho Potato Tour truck made a stop near Jason's Deli, located at 7115 Forest Hill Avenue, on Tuesday, May 13, where travelers and residents could ogle at the enormous starchy vegetable in wonder.

According to The Famous Idaho Potato Tour's website, the potato truck is on its 13th cross-country journey.

The potato tour first began in 2012 as a one-year campaign to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Idaho Potato Commission -- however, with its success, it would continue to tour the United States year after year.

The truck reportedly travels the country promoting the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association certified Idaho potato with its mission to help small charities in towns and cities with its A Big Helping program.

The potato truck weighs 44,320 pounds, with the potato itself weighing four tons. According to the tour's website, 21,562 regular potatoes weigh as much as this giant spud.

A potato this size could allegedly offer 20,217 servings of mashed potatoes and a million average-sized French fries.
