82-year-old Chesterfield man charged with distribution of child sexual abuse material

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- An 82-year-old Chesterfield County man has been charged with distribution of child sexual abuse material following an investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies.

According to officials, 82-year-old Jack E. Smith of Chesterfield Midlothian area was arrested and charged on March 8 with distribution of child pornography and use of a communications system to "commit certain offenses involving children."

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office said Smith had been communicating online with a person he believed to be underage over the course of several weeks and subsequently planned to meet in person.

On the morning of March 8, Smith traveled to the Bedford County area, according to the sheriff's office. When he arrived, he was taken into custody by members of the Southern Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Investigators then headed to Chesterfield's Midlothian area with help from the Chesterfield County Police Department and carried out a search warrant for additional evidence.

Officials said Smith may face additional charges pending forensic analysis of evidence.
