8News gets taste of Detroit-style pizzas from Emmy Squared Pizza

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- 8News got a taste of Detroit-style pizzas from Emmy Squared Pizza on Friday morning ahead of their Short Pump grand opening this weekend.

8News Anchors Autumn Childress and Delaney Hall were joined by Victor Noto, General Manager of Emmy Squared Pizza, and Will Brockwell, who shared how they make their pizzas, as they get closer to their grand opening on Saturday, June 21, located at 2225 Old Brick Road in Glen Allen.

With dough, sauce, cheese and signature toppings to assemble one of their Detroit-style pizzas live on air with 8News, Noto and Brockwell showcased the Le Big Matt burger and chicken parmesan sandwich with basil leaves, fresh mozzarella and homemade red sauce, as well as watermelon salad.

"Our baking process is different because what we do is bake them in these blue steel pans," Brockwell said. "Fun fact -- originally, they started doing it in Detroit, [where] these pans were used to keep small car parts for the car parts. When we cook them in these pans, it's a little bit crispier. The ingredients sit on top, and we put cheese on first."

Those who attend from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday during their grand opening at their Short Pump location will receive a free pizza sample. The first 25 guests will receive free pizzas for a year.

There will also be raffles during this ceremony, with the potential to win an iPad and an Apple Watch. The event will also include mocktails, chicken wings and more.
