Pedestrian safety project coming to Richmond elementary school
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond is investing $780,000 into improving pedestrian safety around Broad Rock Elementary School.
In early April, construction on a new traffic signal project will begin at the intersection of Broad Rock Boulevard and Orcutt Lane, according to a March 24 press release from the city.
These new high-visibility traffic signals will feature reflective backplates, which the city said will improve both signal recognition and visibility, particularly at night or in low-light conditions.
The $780,000 project will also include high-visibility crosswalks, countdown pedestrian signal heads and curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
“Every element of this project is designed with safety in mind – for people of all abilities,” said Richmond's Transportation director, Andy Boenau, in the release. “From high-visibility signals to accessible ramps and visible crossings, these upgrades work together to reduce risk and help save lives. This is what Vision Zero looks like in action.”
Vision Zero is an international effort to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries to zero. It does so by using a "safe systems approach" to prevent severe crashes, per the city.
"By combining safe speeds, safe vehicles, safe roads and safe people, and the best post-crash care, the city continues to build a healthier transportation network that prioritizes safe access using engineering, education, and enforcement," Richmond officials said.
Construction on this project is set to begin in early April, weather permitting. While construction is underway, there will be intermittent lane and sidewalk closures. Drivers are asked to slow down in work zones or whenever they see orange cones, as well as give construction workers extra space.

The project should be completed by fall 2026, the city said.
The $780,000 in funds for this project were provided by the Central Virginia Transportation Authority (CVTA).
