Adult, child seriously hurt in large fire that destroyed Chesterfield home

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Two people were seriously injured in a Monday evening fire that destroyed a Chesterfield County home.

At about 6:15 p.m. on Monday, May 19, firefighters with Chesterfield County Fire and EMS were called to a home in the 21200 block of Genito Road for report of a house fire.

Everyone inside the home was able to escape. While firefighters were unable to find any injured residents at the scene, they later learned that two people -- an adult and a child -- took themselves to the hospital with serious injuries.

Eight residents have been displaced by the fire's damage. The home, as seen in the photos shown above, is a total loss.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Genito Road was closed for some time as fire crews worked the scene. The rural location of the fire, as well as its extent, contributed to how long it took to put the fire out. It was marked under control after over two hours.
