Ashland woman allegedly hits officer with car while fleeing arrest

CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A fugitive who allegedly hit an officer with a car was arrested on Tuesday in Caroline County.

A 42-year-old Ashland woman, Sherenda Elaine Stevens, was arrested today in a joint investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies. She was wanted on several outstanding charges, per authorities.

The Caroline County Sheriff's Office was actively looking for Stevens for court-issued probation violations.

On May 22, officers with the Ashland Police Department found Stevens sitting in a vehicle at a home in the town. According to authorities, when Stevens learned she was under arrest, she allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated, hitting and injuring the officer. She then left the scene.

On May 27, Hanover County sheriff's deputies and Caroline investigators found Stevens in a hotel located in the Camel Church area of Caroline. Deputies announced their presence by knocking on the door of the hotel room and warned Stevens she was surrounded.

Law enforcement said Stevens refused to cooperate at first and began stacking furniture against the door in an attempt to barricade herself inside the room.

Eventually, the investigators convinced her to remove the barricade and she was taken into custody without further incident.

Stevens was hit with four charges, including:

  • Felony eluding
  • Felony assault and battery on law enforcement
  • Obstruction of justice
  • Probation violation

The Caroline County Sheriff's Office extends its thanks to the Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Town of Ashland Police Department for assisting in this investigation.
