Byrd Theatre receives $315,000 donation to begin replacing balcony seating in 2025

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The historic Byrd Theatre has acquired enough funding to begin replacing balcony seating, but more funding is still needed to replace the rest. In September, 8News reported the theatre's plans to replace seating in the balcony and side sections. Currently, seating in these areas is covered by trash bags and caution tape. "We received a donation of $315,000 from our Board Chair, Martin Davenport, to fund the balcony seat replacement," Ben Cronly, the Executive Director of the Byrd Theatre Foundation, told 8News. "Since we received this donation, we are able to move forward with replacing the balcony section that will start in January. We're still about $150,000 short of our goal to replace all of the seats." The end goal, according to Cronly, will be to add bigger seats with more legroom throughout the theatre. There is also a plan to add two additional wheelchair-accessible platforms.
