RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Did you know that many of your favorite music artists may be from Virginia? 8News compiled a list of a few you may know. Pharrell Williams (Photo: Graham Denholm/Getty Images for Tiffany & Co.) Williams -- known for hits like "Happy," "Despicable Me" and "Double Life," among others -- was born in Virginia Beach. He's a singer, rapper, songwriter and producer. He hosts Something in the Water, a music festival that takes place in different areas throughout the "DMV," or areas throughout D.C., Maryland and Virginia. In spring of 2024, a movie based on his life was being filmed in Central Virginia. She's known for both her music as part of indie supergroup boygenius -- with singer-songwriters Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker -- and for her solo work. She's known for hits like "Night Shift" and "Not Strong Enough." Missy Elliott Missy Elliott returned to her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia on Oct. 17, 2023, which was designed as "Missy Elliott Day" in 2022. Missy Elliott, known for hits like "Get Ur Freak On," "work It" and "RATATA," was born in Portsmouth. She's won four Grammy awards and for her six studio albums, she's received 22 nominations. In fall of 2023, she donated $50,000 to the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority for families facing eviction.
