Charlottesville man arrested for assault, kidnapping baby out of Albemarle

UPDATE: Thornton was found and taken into custody later Friday afternoon, according to authorities.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A Charlottesville man who police say attacked a woman and kidnapped a baby in Albemarle County was arrested on Friday following a cross-county search.

At about 3 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15, officers with the Albemarle County Police Department were called to the 100 block of Wahoo Way for report of an unidentified female who appeared to have been assaulted.

When officers arrived, the suspect in this assault -- 22-year-old Malik Thornton of Charlottesville, who was known to the victim -- reportedly fled the scene with an 8-month-old baby.

The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

"After a thorough search, officers located the 8-month-old child unharmed with the assistance of [the] Fluvanna County Sheriff's Office," police said.

Officers could not immediately find Thornton, however, who was believed to be armed and dangerous.

Later Friday afternoon, authorities provided an update, saying he had been located and arrested in Fluvanna County with the help of the sheriff's office.

Thornton was initially wanted for strangulation, child abuse, assault on a family member, abduction by force and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities said additional charges are possible.
