Chesterfield man pleads guilty after post office burglary

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A North Chesterfield County man pleaded guilty on Friday after a reported burglary that occurred in a post office.

On Friday, June 6, 25-year-old Elijah Holmes pleaded guilty and faces up to five years in prison.

As per court documents on June 7, 2024, officers with the Chesterfield County Police Department responded to a reported break-in at a U.S. Post Office in North Chesterfield.

When officers arrived, they found Holmes wearing a ski mask and rubber gloves.

Police said he was carrying three duffel bags, reportedly "full of mail" that he had stolen. This included letters, envelopes and other mail addressed to more than 700 individuals.

Holmes is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 21, and faces up to five years in prison.

According to the Department of Justice, actual sentences for federal crimes are "typically less than the maximum penalties." The department said a federal district court judge will determine any sentence after they consider U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
