Chesterfield warns residents of scammers posing as Planning Commission

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County is warning its residents to be on the lookout for fake Chesterfield Planning Commission emails.

In a recent Facebook post, the county said that both the county and the Chesterfield County Planning Commission is aware of "a fraudulent email scam targeting some residents which falsely claims to be from the Planning Commission."

The fraudulent emails are being sent from, planning.chesterfield.gov@usa.com and reference "conditional use approvals fees." The county emphasizes that these emails are not from Chesterfield or the Planning Commission.

Chesterfield County Government said that, "This scam is able to appear official because it includes skimmed information from publicly available zoning documents and appears on a quick glance to be legitimate." Although it appears legitimate the county states the emails are not associated with the county in "any way."

Chesterfield reassures residents that it will never do the following:

  • Chesterfield County will never send out an email asking for payment via wire transfer, credit card or Automated Clearing House (ACH).
  • Always make sure that official emails end in "@chesterfield.gov".
  • If your in doubt, call 804-748-1050 to verify.

The county said that if you have sent money or feel as though you have personally been a victim of a scam, to contact Chesterfield County Police's non-emergency line at 804-748-1251.
