Chesterfield’s last year-round school transitioning to traditional calendar
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County's only remaining year-round school will officially transition to a traditional school over the summer of 2026.
On Thursday, Dec. 18, the Chesterfield County School Board unanimously approved the calendar changes necessary to transition Bellwood Elementary School from a year-round school to a traditional school, which will take place at the start of the 2026-27 school year.
Bellwood Elementary is currently the only year-round school within the Chesterfield public school system -- but it won't be for much longer. In September, after learning that there was no evidence that year-round school was improving students' learning, the school board voted to move Bellwood to a traditional school year calendar.
To facilitate this shift, school leaders proposed a transitional schedule over the summer of 2026.

Bellwood students will still end the current school year on June 3, 2026. However, instead of taking an intersession break as previously scheduled, they will take the traditional summer break alongside the rest of the school district, which will last until Aug. 23, 2026.
Summer school will be offered to interested Bellwood students between June 22 and July 16, 2026.
