Fun ways to celebrate the Flying Squirrels opening week at CarMax Park

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Didn't get a ticket for the Flying Squirrels' home opener at CarMax Park? There are plenty of other opportunities to celebrate the opening week!

After the home opener sold out faster than any other game in the team's history, the Richmond Flying Squirrels have announced events during the inaugural week at CarMax Park from April 7 to 12 to celebrate the opening of the new ballpark.

"The opening of CarMax Park has been a massive, 15-year undertaking," said Lou DiBella, the owner of the Richmond Flying Squirrels. "Celebrating with just one opening day doesn’t fit the achievement. We felt it was important to roll out a full itinerary of events to commemorate this new park and new era for the Flying Squirrels, and to thank everyone who made this dream a reality."

Opening week will feature the following activities outside the main gates from 5 to 7 p.m.:

  • Wednesday, April 8: Pregame happy hour from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and pets in the park for sections 117 and 118.
  • Thursday, April 9: A pregame skydiving show.
  • Friday, April 10: The first pitch will be thrown out at 7:05 p.m. by Gene Alley, a two-time MLB All-Star and Richmond native.
  • Saturday, April 11: Postgame fireworks show.
  • Sunday, April 12: "Signature Sunday," a pregame autograph session with the Flying Squirrel players. As well as an aviator giveaway for kids and the option for them to run around the bases after the game!

Additionally, CarMax Park features various collections of public art where fans can visit these works throughout the park. During opening week, community members can watch some artists put the final touches on their artwork.
