Clacking fans raise $12,000 for VSU tuition assistance

PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- Virginia State University-themed (VSU) clacking fans have garnered national attention after going viral at the university's commencement ceremony on May 17, with purchases raising about $12,000 for the Student Tuition Assistance Fund.

The fans garnered national attention after the spring 2025 commencement. They were eventually made available to the public for a limited time and became "a symbol of Trojan pride and community spirit," per a release from the university.

A total of 600 fans were sold, with $20 from each sale going to the Student Tuition Assistance Fund, which supports any financial issues students face that the university said may "hinder their ability to remain enrolled."

"It just goes to show how our viral videos have a profound impact,” said Gwen Williams Dandridge, assistant vice president of communications. “By offering the fans for purchase, we not only shared a piece of that unforgettable day, but we also helped to open doors for our Trojans through tuition assistance. We turned a joyful moment into a meaningful opportunity, which is a powerful way to show that Greater truly Happens Here, and everyone can be a part of it."

The clacking fans were featured in the university's "Boots On The Ground" celebration during commencement and were revealed as they played a hit by 803Fresh. The graduates danced along to the reported famous line, "Where them fans at?"

According to the university, a video capturing the celebration gained millions of views and led many students, alumni and other communities to want a fan of their own.
