Community food drive honors Henrico teen tragically killed 5 years ago
HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Loved ones of a Henrico County middle schooler who was shot and killed in 2021 continue to do acts of service in her memory. A food drive bearing her name is set to take place on Saturday -- just shy of the fifth anniversary of her death.
On March 26, 2021, 13-year-old Lucia Bremer of Henrico was walking home with a friend when Dylan Williams -- a boy neither girl knew -- approached them with a gun. He then shot Bremer multiple times, killing her. Williams, who was 14 years old at the time, was tried as an adult and sentenced to 60 years in prison.
In the five years since Bremer's tragic death, both her family and community have consistently come together to do good in her memory. One such example is the Lucia Bremer Food Drive, which they host either on or near the anniversary of her death each year.
The 5th-annual Lucia Bremer Food Drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 21 at the Canterbury Recreation Association, located at 1300 Pump Rd. in Henrico.

Bremer, who was a member of Canterbury Recreation, was a "vital part" of its community, a spokesperson said in a March 18 press release. Much of that community still misses her dearly.
That's why these annual food drives are so important to the Bremer family. They seek to "honor the memory of their precious girl" while bringing the community together for a great cause.
"Far too many of your neighbors in Central Virginia struggle with hunger every day," the spokesperson said in the release. "With your help, we can turn hunger into hope for our neighbors in need."
While FeedMore will happily accept any donations, Canterbury Recreation provided a list of its most-needed items. That list is as follows:
- Nut butters
- Canned proteins
- Canned soup and vegetables
- Canned fruits
- Tomato products
- Beans and lentils, in cans or bags
- Cereal, hot or cold
- Pasta, rice and whole grains
- Healthy snacks, dried fruit and nuts
- Condiments
- Oils
- Spices
Items that are classified as low-sugar and/or low-salt are especially needed.
However, FeedMore does not accept items in glass containers, as they break easily.
