‘The beginning of a journey’: Richmond Flying Squirrels excited for future at CarMax Park

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Fireworks lit up the sky on Tuesday as a new chapter began for baseball in Richmond, with fans packing CarMax Park for the Richmond Flying Squirrels’ opening day.

From appearances by Nutzy and Nutasha to ballpark food and the game itself, the stadium was filled with celebrations on Tuesday, April 7. But for many in attendance, the day marked more than just a return to baseball -- it signaled a bright future at CarMax Park.

"It’s surreal," said Squirrels general manager Anthony Oppermann. "Every baseball season, it’s just the beginning of a journey."

After spending 15 seasons at The Diamond, Oppermann said the vision for the new stadium extends far beyond baseball.

"The important thing for people to understand about CarMax Park is it’s not just a baseball stadium," Oppermann said. "It really is a 365-day-a-year venue."

In addition to games, the space is expected to host a range of events, including reading festivals, outdoor movie nights and other community gatherings.

"Tonight is just the beginning of the journey," he said. "This first year is about learning the building, learning all the capabilities, trying some different things. Next year [is] when we really start to have fun."

For those who have watched the project from the ground up, the new stadium represents both growth and opportunity for the surrounding area.

"I live in Scott’s Addition, so I’ve seen it from the beginning when they were starting to build it to now," one fan told 8News. "I feel like this is going to bring even more people to the area, because it’s really nice."
