Dogs take flight, make a splash at Riverrock’s Ultimate Air Dogs competition
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Dogs of all sizes took to the skies and the water this weekend for the Dominion Energy's Riverrock Ultimate Air Dogs competition on Brown’s Island.
From temperatures near 90 degrees, to 60-pound retrievers and tiny but determined terriers, this Saturday, May 17, the four-legged athletes found the perfect way to beat the heat.

The rules are simple, each dog gets a running start off a dock, chasing a toy thrown into a pool, and the canine that jumps the furthest takes home bragging rights—and often, a few treats.
Dogs of all breeds and sizes by leapt off docks and made a splash in front of cheering crowds.
Among the top performers was Mako, a 4-year-old dog who jumped an impressive 32 feet, just a few feet shy of his personal best of 35.
“He’s happy,” his handler said, “He gets to do what he loves to do.”

While some dogs are seasoned competitors, others are just beginning their journeys.
Yeti, a small first-time competitor, managed a seven-foot leap, “She’s out there trying to show that all the little dogs can do stuff too,” her owner said.
Then there was Chester, who had a more cautious debut.
“This is his very first time,” his handler said, “He loves the water—he’ll jump into the ocean, off of docks—but today he chose the safe route.”

Whether they were flying high or just testing the waters, the event was less about competition and more about celebration.
Spectators enjoyed the display of enthusiasm, agility, and pure canine joy.
The Ultimate Air Dogs competition continues until 9 p.m. Saturday, with more chances to catch the action on Sunday, May 18, from noon to 3 p.m. at Brown’s Island.
