Driver dies after crash, vehicle fire while still inside on I-95 in Prince George County

PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver is dead after their vehicle burst into flames following a crash on Interstate 95 in Prince George County Tuesday morning.

At 5:28 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10, Prince George County Fire and EMS crews were called to the scene of a deadly crash involving a vehicle and a box truck near Interstate 295 in Prince George County near Tavern Road.

Officials said the box truck, which was heading south on I-95, crossed over to the northbound lanes and hit a vehicle that had one person inside.

After hitting the vehicle, officials said the box truck rolled over to its side and started leaking fuel. The vehicle that was hit was heavily damaged and burst into flames with the driver still inside.

The driver of the vehicle that was hit died on the scene, according to officials.

No other injuries have been reported. The vehicle fire was extinguished by Prince George County Fire and EMS crews and the fuel was cleaned up.

As of 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, all northbound lanes of I-95 near I-295 in Prince George County. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes to avoid delays.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is reportedly working to detour drivers.

Prince George Fire/EMS, Police, Virginia State Police and VDOT crews remain on the scene.
