Driver dies, passenger in critical condition after single-vehicle crash in Lancaster County
LANCASTER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A 63-year-old man is dead and a 56-year-old woman is in critical condition following a single-vehicle crash in Lancaster County Thursday evening. At 8:42 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, Virginia State Police deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash on Greentown Road just south of Gaskin Roads in the Weems area of Lancaster County. Police said a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck had overturned multiple times, ejecting two people who were inside. According to officials, the pickup truck was heading south on Greentown Road when it ran off the left side of the road and overturned. (Photo: Virginia State Police)(Photo: Virginia State Police) The driver, 63-year-old Irvin Maurice Yerby of the Weems area, and the passenger, 56-year-old Martha Lynn Veney of the town of Kilmarnock were both ejected from the vehicle. Neither were wearing seatbelts during the crash, according to police. Both victims were taken to a local hospital, where they were subsequently airlifted to another hospital in Richmond. Yerby later died due to his injuries in the hospital. Veney remains in critical condition, officials said. Police said the investigation indicated that alcohol and speed were contributing factors in the crash. Officials continue to investigate.
