Driver seriously injured after crashing into SSP vehicle on I-95 North in Chesterfield

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- A driver was seriously injured after crashing into a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Safety Service Patrol (SSP) vehicle on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County on Tuesday night.

Virginia State Police said the crash, which involved an SSP member contracted by the VDOT, took place just before 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, on I-95 North at the 58-mile marker, in the area of Woods Edge Road.

The SSP vehicle was working with vehicles on the left shoulder of the interstate and was pulling into the left lane when it was hit by another vehicle, according to police.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the SSP vehicle suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. They were taken to an area hospital.

The driver of the SSP vehicle was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation.

At one point, all northbound lanes were closed. They have since reopened.
