Family bike ride to honor Mary Munford Elementary principal hit by car scheduled for Friday

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A family bike ride to honor Mary Munford Elementary School's principal Gregory Muzik is planned for Friday, March 14.

A staff member at the school confirmed Muzik was the cyclist who the Richmond Police Department (RPD) said was rear-ended by a car while riding his bike on Patterson Avenue on Tuesday, March 11, around 4:38 p.m. Officials said his injuries were life-threatening.

The family bike ride is aimed to show the community’s support for Muzik and "demand safer, slower, more pedestrian-friendly roads," said the local non-profit Bike Walk RVA in a social media post.

The bike parade will start at 4:30 p.m. in the park across the street from Albert Hill Middle School and will end with a gathering in Muzik’s honor at Mary Munford Elementary.

Bike Walk RVA said to wear red, suspenders and decorate your bikes. Helmets are required, according to organizers.

Anyone interested in attending is asked to RSVP ahead of time on its Facebook or Instagram page. At the time of reporting, hundreds had already RSVP'd.

In the meantime, police said the driver who hit Muzik remained at the scene of the crash and is cooperating. They're asking anyone with information or doorbell video of the crash to reach out.

Richmond Public School’s website said Muzik has worked at the school for over 30 years. 8News spoke to a neighbor of the school earlier in the week who said Muzik is “known to be the greatest.”
