Former Prince George apartment employee wanted for embezzlement

PRINCE GEORGE, Va. (WRIC) — The Prince George County Police Department has issued an arrest warrant for a former apartment complex employee in connection to an embezzlement investigation.

8News first learned Puddledock Place Apartments in Prince George was at the center of an embezzlement investigation in September 2024. That's when current residents Brooke Lindsay and Kendra Tonic said their rent checks went missing.

In addition to the two, other residents said they never received an explanation for the financial issue and were facing eviction if they didn't pay up.

“It's not fair to us. It's not fair to people in general, because we work hard for our money, we've got families we take care of," Lindsay said.

After learning about the investigation, Lindsay told 8News she was still left with a lingering balance and didn't know whether the person responsible would face any consequences.

A spokesperson from the property management team previously told 8News "management is actively addressing all resident concerns, especially regarding any payments or related issues.”

For months, 8News continued to ask where their team stands in updating residents. In May of 2025 residents told us they still didn't have many answers.

According to police, the department has issued a warrant for the arrest of Shawn Smith, a former employee at the complex. He is now facing a felony charge for forgery.

Police said Smith is also facing similar charges in Maryland and Virginia Beach.

“It was so just terrible because of the lack of communication with the management. Like we would not have not known about it if it weren't for you," Lindsay said.“I was shocked but I'm just like, why did it take so long?"
