Fraudsters posing as Henrico government targeting residents

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico County is warning residents of fraudulent emails and invoices asking residents to make large payments to continue in the county's Board of Zoning Appeals process.

According to the county, residents are reportedly receiving emails and invoices from people pretending to be from the county's planning department, targeting those with cases before the county's Board of Zoning Appeals.

The scammers are asking people to make "significant payment by wire transfer to allow the individual’s case to proceed," per the county.

The county assured residents that the planning department would never request payments via email or invoice and does not conduct wire transfer transactions.

If you or someone you know recently received a fraudulent email or invoice, the county urges you to call the Henrico Police Division at 804-501-5000.
