‘Gloves Over Guns’ boxing event in Henrico aims to raise awareness about youth gun violence

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The annual "Gloves Over Guns" boxing event is returning to a Henrico County school on Aug. 2, with hopes to encourage children to throw punches and put down their weapons.

According to a release, the fifth annual boxing match will be held on Saturday, Aug. 2, at Varina High School in Henrico County, bringing together local and elite-level boxers and informing the public about the importance of youth gun violence prevention.

Doors open at noon on Aug. 2, and matches begin at 1 p.m., per a release.

The event is organized by the local nonprofit organization In My Corner Inc., the county itself and the Varina High School athletic department.

Firearms are the leading cause of death in children and youth 0 to 24 years of age in the United States, per data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Admission is $10, and food trucks and other vendors will be on-site, according to the organization.
