Hanover County Public Schools discusses boundary adjustment options for overcrowding

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Several boundary adjustment scenarios have recently been proposed to Hanover County Public Schools (HCPS) in an attempt to help with future student capacity needs. There are three main options that were proposed by MGT, the third-party vendor that HCPS chose to head the process, in several community engagement meetings at the end of January. Summaries of the scenarios, as described by HCPS and MGT, can be read below. Blue Scenario In this option, the Giles neighborhood of Hanover would move from Cool Spring ES to Washington-Henry ES at the beginning of the 2025-26 school year. Those in Atlee Manor, Craney Island Farms and Craney Island Estates, as well as homes in that general area, would move from Cool Spring ES to Washington-Henry ES at the start of the 2027-28 school year -- aligning with the opening of Washington-Henry's replacement. An area west of Route 301 near Pearson's Corner ES would move from Rural Point ES to Pearson's Corner ES. An area that is east of Route 301, south of Totopotomoy Creek and near Studley Road would move from Washington-Henry ES to Rural Point ES An area that south of Meadowbridge Road would move from Washington-Henry ES to Mechanicsville ES. Green Scenario Those in Atlee Manor, Craney Island Farms and Graney Island Estates would move from Cool Spring ES to Washington-Henry ES at the start of the 2025-26 school year. Giles would go from Cool Spring ES to Washington-Henry ES at the start of the 2027-28 school year, aligning with the opening of Washington-Henry's replacement. The areas west of Route 301, east of Route 301 and south of Meadowbridge Road would follow the same path proposed in the Blue Scenario. Purple Scenario Those in the Kings Charter area would be split along Charter Lake with a certain amount of students staying at Cool Spring ES and other students going from Cool Spring ES to Pearson's Corner ES. Craney Island Estates and Craney Island Farms would move from Cool Spring ES to Washington-Henry ES. Rutland Village townhomes that are west of Atlee Road would go from Pearson's Corner ES to Washington-Henry ES. For an in-depth description of the scenarios, access to a recording of MGT's meeting and its accompanying PowerPoint presentation, visit the HCPS webpage dedicated to the boundary adjustments.
