Hanover County to host free e-waste recycling event

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County will host a free e-waste recycling event on Saturday where attendees can drop off old electronics like TVs and tablets.

The e-waste recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Mechanicsville Convenience Center, located at 7427 Verdi Lane in Hanover County.

The event is open only to Hanover residents, with an ID required, according to a county spokesperson.

Items that will be accepted include the following:

  • Flat-screen monitors and televisions
  • CRT (old convex style) monitors and CRT televisions
  • Computers, tablets and cell phones, which will be shredded (hard drive only for computers)
  • Cell phones and tablets with internal batteries
  • Printers and battery backups
  • Rechargeable batteries, which can pose a fire hazard and should not be placed in household trash or recycling
  • Small electrical items with a plug, including microwaves

The following items will not be accepted, according to the county:

  • Appliances containing Freon
  • Alkaline batteries
  • Smoke detectors

A county spokesperson said e-waste items will be removed from vehicles.
