‘If we get one gun off the street, we could save one life’: City of Richmond hosts gun buy-back event

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Richmond hosted its gun buy-back event on Saturday, where residents could receive gift cards for turning in their guns with no questions asked. On Saturday, Dec. 14, the City of Richmond hosted its gun buy-back event from 8 a.m. to noon at New Life Deliverance Tabernacle, located at 900 Decatur Street, where residents aged 18 years or older had the opportunity to receive up to $250 based on the type of guns they turned in. The event was in partnership with New Life Deliverance Tabernacle, which officials said is a non-profit dedicated to getting unwanted guns out of circulation through annual gun buyback programs. 8News spoke with Phyllis Alexander, church administrator at New Life Deliverance Tabernacle, who said the community-based church has several gun prevention events. "So we are actually here to assist the police in reference to getting the guns off of the streets," Alexander said. "We feel like, though, if we get one gun off the street, we could save one life." Alexander said residents could earn gift cards to Walmart, Amazon and Wawa for turning in their guns at the event, which ranged in price from $100 to $50. Captain John Hall said that they had a great amount of participation at the event. "People have different reasons for participating, but we find that it's really folks who determine that they don't want to have their firearm anymore and they want a good, legitimate reason to dispose of it, and in addition to that, reap the benefits for this holiday season of getting a gift card," Hall said.
