COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. (WRIC) -- Icy roads are expected in Central Virginia following recent snow fall -- which can cause dangerous driving conditions.

Margarita Noyes with the Colonial Driving School, a family owned and operated business, said first and foremost, if you don’t have to drive, stay home.

If you do, there are ways to do it to make it less dangerous.

Noyes said assume drivers around you don’t know how to drive in snow and leave distance between your car and others.

  • Go below the speed limit.
  • Don’t punch the brake or accelerate or turn the wheel suddenly.
  • This could cause you to lose traction and start sliding.
  • Don’t make any quick sudden moves if you start sliding.

“As soon as you start sliding, take your foot off the gas and off the brake so that you’re coasting," Noyes told 8News. "You can gently steer a little bit in the way you want to go but not much. And as soon as you feel the tires grab the pavement, gently steer in the way you want the car to go.”
