‘I’m still waiting on him to come back’: Family grieves man shot outside of Foot Locker

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Nearly two months after 20-year-old De’Andre Johnson was shot outside a Foot Locker on West Broad Street and later died at a nearby hospital, his family said they are still waiting for answers -- and justice.

“He... I’m just hurt,” said his mother, Qunanette Johnson. “I have so many memories with him, but I'm always going to remember that laugh he had.”

Johnson was shot outside the store on March 2, just weeks before his 21st birthday. Richmond Police said they responded shortly after 2 p.m. and found Johnson on the ground with a gunshot wound.

“The last words that I had with my son was, ‘Pooh, where are you going?’ And he said, ‘Ma, I'll be back,’” his mother recalled. “I'm still waiting on him to come back.”

The Foot Locker is next to a tobacco shop, where Johnson’s mother said he was headed before the confrontation began.

“He was walking into that tobacco place when the guy [Foot Locker employee] holds the door and said, ‘We need to talk man to man,’” she said.

A video that gained traction on social media appears to show a fight between Johnson and a man believed to be a Foot Locker employee. The footage ends just before he shot Johnson.

“Knowing my son, the person that he is… he know that he wanted no wrong. So he was going to hear him out and see what he was going to have to say,” his mother said.

Richmond Police have not confirmed whether the shooter was a store employee. So far, no arrests have been made.

“We're still fighting, trying to get justice still to this day,” said Johnson’s cousin, who said he was like her brother. “And we're never letting up—that’s one thing about us—we not gonna let up until justice is served. And we don’t care what it's gonna take, what we gotta go through, it's gonna be served.”

Richmond Police said there has been a spike in violent crime across the city in 2025, compared to this time last year. Johnson’s family said they have not received any updates from police since the week he was killed, and it has been about a month since they were last in contact with RPD.

Still, they remain determined to get justice.
