Broadway in Richmond brings award-winning ‘The Outsiders’ to Altria Theater
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Broadway lovers will have until the end of this weekend to enjoy the Tony Award-winning production at Richmond's Altria Theater.
"The Outsiders," a classic coming-of-age story by author S.E. Hinton, opened on Tuesday as part of the Broadway in Richmond 2025-26 season. Set in 1967, the production follows Ponyboy Curtis, his best friend Johnny Cade and their Greaser family as they navigate hardships and dreams of a better life.
The story of friendship, family, belonging and acceptance in "a world that doesn't accept them" has been well-received in Richmond, said actress Justice Moore.
Moore said the previous nights have welcomed a lot of students to the audience.

"They've been so so beautiful ... they're so not afraid to be loud, to be responsive," she said. "They're laughing with us, they're crying with us. We love when they're responsive like that because it gives us more energy on the stage."
Moore plays Ace, a new character not in the book or the movie, who's feisty, tough and inspiring.
"It's an honor playing her every night," she said.

Actress Hannah Jennens, who is from Loudon County, said the Broadway production now showing at Richmond's Altria Theater was "special to her."
"It is such an honor to be back home -- to be back in Virginia, playing at a theater this iconic, has been such a gift," she said. "I wish my parents could be here."
Attendees can expect a "4D experience" in this immersive play now through Sunday, March 29.
"The blood is going in your face, the gravel is going in your face, there is rain coming down," Moore said. "You're getting this heightened experience of the classic story that we all love."
