Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden recognized as Autism Friendly Community by organization

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden has been recognized as an Autism Friendly Community (ASCV) by the Autism Society of Central Virginia.

To celebrate the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden's designation as an Autism Friendly Community (AFC), a special ASCV member event will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30.

Families will be able to explore more than 50 acres of the gardens as well as the Waterway splash pad.

According to the organization, the designation follows a collaboration between ASCV and Lewis Ginter centering accessibility enhancements and staff training.

Garden staff reportedly completed specialized autism training and began using new tools and accommodations to better understand and support those on the autism spectrum.

News resources that have been made available include a Social Story and Sensory Guide to help visitors prepare for their experience, as well as on-site sensory backpacks that include noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, sunglasses and communication cards.

Lewis Ginter has reportedly become the eighth organization to receive an AFC designation in Central Virginia.
