LIST: Items to include in your car’s emergency kit for winter weather

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- With winter weather expected for Central Virginia over the weekend, here's how you can prepare your vehicle in case you need to travel.

In the event of dangerous conditions on the road and possible car trouble, drivers can stay prepared by keeping an emergency kit in their car.

The National Weather Service recommends keeping the following items in your car's kit:

  • Blanket
  • Boots, mittens and warm clothes
  • Flashlight
  • Flares
  • Water and snacks
  • Cell phone charger
  • First aid kit
  • Shovel, ice scraper and snow brush
  • Tow rope
  • Jumper cables
  • Tire chains or snow tires
  • Bag of sand or cat litter (to be used for traction for your tires)
