According to the Associated Press, the day is marked each Nov. 20 and began in 1999 to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman who was killed in Massachusetts. 8News compiled the following list of a few events happening in the Richmond area in honor of Transgender Day of Remembrance: University of Richmond's Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil From 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20, the University of Richmond's Student Center for Equity and Inclusion will host a vigil in Stern Plaza. The plaza is between Jepson Hall and the Humanities Building. "On this day, we commemorate those lives lost to anti-transgender violence through speeches, song, and a reading of the names," an entry on the university's calendar reads. Zakia McKensey, founder of Nationz Foundation, will attend and provide remarks along with members of the campus community. If it rains, the event will instead take place in the Multicultural Space, located on the first floor of Whitehurst Hall. Nationz Foundation's Transgender Day of Remembrance and Resilience Nationz Foundation supports those in the greater Richmond area by providing HIV and STI testing as well as care and wellness services. The foundation will host a remembrance and resilience event at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Diversity Richmond, located at 1407 Sherwood Avenue in Richmond.
